Strathclyde Police in conjunction with the Wishaw Crime Prevention Panel teamed up with local Tyre and Exhaust Dealers – Cooper Brothers of Newmains for another evening of driver education and awareness. The event took place on Tuesday 31st March 2009 with local women attending at the garage premises at Overtown Road, Newmains.
Cooper Brothers trained staff gave expert advice on basic car maintenance such as – how to check car tyres for tread wear and pressure, changing a tyre and checking the water, oil and fluids in a car.
The group were also provided with a presentation on Personal Safety for the Lone Driver by local Crime Reduction Officer Constable Dougie Denholm from Wishaw Police Office. The Driver Safety advice included topics such as motorway driving, breakdowns, safe parking and road rage. The evening was completed with a short quiz.
Over the three events since 27th January 2009 a total of 60 local ladies will feel more confident with their motoring and their general personal safety having attended one of the informative and practical events.
Constable Dougie Denholm said,
“I think that those who have attended the events have enjoyed the informal atmosphere of the sessions and have gone away with an increased awareness, not only in terms of personal safety issues, but also the legislation affecting motor vehicles on the road.”
Garry Gibson Cooper Brothers operations manager said,
“Our staff have enjoyed the Driver Awareness evenings and are only too pleased to help local women feel more confident with their motoring and hopefully have a better understanding of the vehicle that they are driving. Our staff are always keen to help motorists and hope that those who have attended the events will not be afraid to call in and speak to our mechanics and seek assistance with their vehicle in the future.”
